How to Support a Loved One Living with HIV

Practical and emotional guidance for partners, family, and friends supporting someone with HIV in Orange County.

When someone you love receives an HIV diagnosis, you may feel fear, protectiveness, or helplessness, sometimes all at once. Support matters, and you do not have to guess your way through it.

Start With Listening

Avoid jumping to solutions. Useful phrases:

  • "I'm here with you."
  • "What do you need from me right now?"
  • "There's no rush to tell anyone else."

Do not share their status with relatives, employers, or social media without explicit permission.

Learn Modern HIV Care (Briefly)

Treatment today is highly effective. Your loved one's clinician explains labs, medication, and U=U (undetectable = untransmittable when suppressed). Shanti helps with emotional adjustment and systems navigation, not prescribing.

Point them to New diagnosis next steps and HIV testing if they still need medical linkage.

Practical Help That Actually Helps

Ask before doing:

  • Drive to the office in Laguna Hills or telehealth setup
  • Sit with insurance or CalOptima paperwork
  • Remember group nights: Círculo Latino, first Tuesday monthly
  • Respect medication privacy: no pill policing unless they ask

Case management at Shanti works with your loved one, so call [email protected] only if they want you on the line.

When Family Conflict Appears

Cultural shame, religion, or misinformation can fracture households. Couples or family counseling through Shanti may help when everyone agrees to attend. Individual therapy for you is also valid. Supporting someone is stressful.

Care for the Caregiver

Burnout is real. Schedule your own mental health counseling via intake (949) 452-0888. You do not need an HIV diagnosis to receive mental health care at Shanti.

Language Barriers

If your loved one prefers Spanish, mention it immediately so intake routes to Spanish counseling and Círculo Latino. Read Spanish mental health services.

Crisis Planning

If your loved one expresses suicidal thoughts, call or text 988 together. See 988 and Shanti.

Encourage Professional Support, Gently

One call to Shanti does not define their identity forever. It connects them to counseling, groups, and peers who understand.

What You Can Actually Offer

Support that lands tends to be specific rather than general. Some of it is logistics you can take off their plate, and some of it is knowing where to hand off.

Handing off matters more than people expect. A case manager at Shanti connects clients to medical and dental care, specialty pharmaceutical care, housing options, benefits counseling, emergency financial assistance, and nutrition support. If your loved one is drowning in appointments and paperwork, "let me help you call a case manager" is more useful than offering to help with any one of those yourself.

Their Disclosure, Their Timing

The hardest discipline for a supportive person is not moving faster than the person you are supporting. Who knows, when, and how much is theirs to decide, including within your own family. Confidentiality protections mean the choice stays with them; releases follow confidentiality rules and they control most disclosures.

If you are holding information you were trusted with, that trust is the whole thing.

Counseling Is Available to You Too

Supporting someone through a chronic diagnosis is genuinely demanding, and you do not need a diagnosis of your own to be a client. Shanti offers individual counseling, couples counseling, and family counseling. If the strain is showing up in the relationship rather than in either person alone, couples or family sessions may be the more accurate tool.

Fees are $65 per session with an unlicensed therapist and $100 with a licensed therapist. Many insurance plans including CalOptima are accepted for eligible services, and telehealth is available throughout California.

If Language Is a Barrier in the Family

Staff work in English, Spanish, Farsi, and Hindi. Círculo Latino meets the first Tuesday of each month, 5:30 to 7 pm, entirely in Spanish, free and open. Anyone in the Spanish-speaking community is welcome; you do not need to be a Shanti client, and that includes family members looking for their own footing.

What Not to Take On

You are not the case manager, the counselor, or the physician. Trying to be all three is the fastest route to being no use at all. Shanti does not provide HIV testing, lab work, treatment, or prescriptions either; those come from a clinic, and a case manager can make the connection.

Your job is narrower and more durable: stay in the relationship, and know the numbers.

The Numbers

949-452-0888 or [email protected], Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm PT. For case management, [email protected]. In crisis, 988 is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day.
