Just Diagnosed with HIV? Practical Next Steps in OC

Emotional grounding, medical linkage, and Orange County resources for people newly diagnosed with HIV, from Shanti OC.

A new HIV diagnosis can flood your mind with fear, shame, and urgent questions. Breathe. Thousands of Orange County residents live full lives with HIV, and support exists from day one.

Step 1: Confirm Medical Care

Your first priority is an HIV medical provider who runs labs and discusses antiretroviral therapy. Treatment today is highly effective at suppressing the virus and protecting your health.

Shanti does not replace your doctor. We help with appointments, insurance, ADAP/Medi-Cal paperwork, and staying on track when life gets chaotic.

Step 2: Call Shanti for Emotional and Practical Support

Dial (949) 452-0888 and tell intake you were recently diagnosed. You can access:

Enrollment often starts with Simple Practice forms within 24 hours of inquiry.

Step 3: Learn What Undetectable Means (U=U)

When someone takes HIV treatment as prescribed and maintains a durably undetectable viral load, there is effectively no risk of sexually transmitting HIV to a partner (U=U). Your clinician explains how long you need to be undetectable for this to apply and monitors labs accordingly; Shanti counselors help you process what it means emotionally.

We do not give medical advice. We help you show up for appointments that do.

Step 4: Find Community

Isolation worsens new diagnoses. Consider:

  • Círculo Latino: Spanish circle, first Tuesday monthly
  • HIV therapy group: clinician-led, weekly, by intake

Read HIV therapy vs. peer support.

Step 5: Plan Disclosure Carefully

You choose who to tell and when. Therapists explore family, partner, and workplace fears without pushing you to disclose before you are ready. Case managers know some benefits require documentation, and they explain separately from emotional work.

Stigma Is Real, and Survivable

Internalized stigma hurts as much as external judgment. Counseling targets shame directly. You are not being punished. You are joining a community that has fought this epidemic since 1987.

What Shanti Handles, and What It Does Not

Being precise about this early saves you calls.

Shanti provides: HIV case management, mental health counseling, a weekly clinician-led HIV therapy group, community education, and psychological testing and evaluation. Case managers link you to medical and dental care, specialty pharmacy, housing, benefits counseling, emergency financial assistance, and nutrition support.

Shanti does not provide: HIV testing or lab work, medical treatment, or prescriptions. Those come from a clinic or physician, and a case manager can help you get connected to one.

If you have a result but no doctor yet, that is the gap case management exists to close.

The First Weeks Are Logistics as Much as Emotion

Both are real, and they compete for the same attention. What tends to help is separating them deliberately:

  • Logistics go to a case manager. Insurance, pharmacy, housing, benefits, appointments. These are solvable, and having one person tracking them removes a surprising amount of daily weight.
  • The rest goes to counseling or to a group. Fear of disclosure, anger, grief, the sense that your future rearranged itself in an afternoon.

Trying to hold both alone is what turns a difficult month into a crisis.

Community, on Two Different Terms

The HIV therapy group is clinician-led and meets weekly, arranged through intake. Because members attend consistently and come to know each other, the group itself becomes therapeutic; feedback from people who share your diagnosis carries a weight that is hard to source elsewhere. Low-cost fees start at $65, and intake walks through options.

Círculo Latino is different in kind: a free, open, Spanish-language circle the first Tuesday of each month, 5:30 to 7 pm. No client relationship required.

Disclosure Is Yours to Time

There is no schedule you are behind on. Who you tell, when, and how much is your decision, and it is worth rehearsing with a counselor before a conversation you cannot take back. Confidentiality protections mean the choice stays yours; releases follow the rules and you control most disclosures.
